Shukunegi is a historic fishing village located in the southwestern part of Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture. This area flourished during the Edo period as a port of call for Kitamaebune, merchant ships that played a significant role in Japan’s coastal trade. Many shipowners and shipbuilders lived in Shukunegi, and their influence can still be seen in the tightly clustered wooden houses with distinctive architectural features. Due to limited land, the houses were built very close to each other, and some exteriors were made using old ship planks. Today, Shukunegi is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, ensuring that its historical scenery is carefully maintained.
